Golf in a strange town
Or, how to find a place to play
By ED TRAVIS
May 29, 2011 - Every golfer has been in the situation of
being in a strange town, wanting to play but not
knowing what courses are nearby or anything about
them, much less basic information such as how to
contact a good course. Golf Minnesota magazine has
neatly solved this pesky problem with a smartphone
app (either Android or Apple) covering golfing Meccas
such as Florida, North Carolina, Arizona and California
plus of course Minnesota. Other states are also
available and more are being added all the time.
Working with your smartphone’s GPS system golfers
simply tap “Find Courses Near Me” and up pops a map
with public courses within 20 miles or they can use the
“Interactive Map” to scroll to any part of the state. There’s
also a “Search For Courses” function and “The 19th
Hole” feature to find, well…a 19th hole.
Individual course information includes the standard
address and phone plus yardages and photos and
some courses post YouTube videos to further entice you
to call for a tee time. And by the way tee times are easy
too; just tap one button and your phone will dial the
number.
Finally, being from out of town you won’t know how to get
to the course so the app supplies turn-by-turn directions
– you’ll never miss a tee time again because of getting
lost driving to the course.
Cost of this handy app is $5.99 per state and that cost
could be offset by special offers from courses, shops
and restaurants featured in the app.

of courses. The map may also be scrolled to other parts of
the state.
Information for each course includes the basic
address and phone plus photos and often the course
has a video to watch. The "Call" button is a
one-touch way to make a tee time.
